SPECIALIST---9:57-10:47am Monday: PE Tuesday: Art Wednesday: Library Thursday: PE Friday: Music Make sure your child wears appropriate shoes on Mon. and Thursday for PE class and brings library books to school on Wednesday to turn in and get new ones. BREAKFAST School breakfast is free and available every morning in the school cafeteria from 7:45-8:00. Make sure your child is at school as close to 7:45 am so he/she has plenty of time to eat breakfast before school begins.
LUNCH--OUR LUNCH TIME IS 11:25-12:00 each day. School lunch is free for all students, however if you would like to send your child with a lunch from home, please make sure it is labeled with your child's name and room number.
POWER SNACK----We will eat our snack around 10:20 am during our morning recess time. Studies have shown that when students eat a good breakfast in the morning, they do better in school. Those students who are eating breakfast are eating early, and we don't eat lunch until 11:25 am. That is a long time to go without anything to eat! So, I would like to have a short power snack in the morning. The snacks need to be low-fat, healthy, foods that can be eaten quickly and without much mess. No cakes, cookies, candy, or brownies please! Some examples of some great snacks are: apples, carrot sticks, popcorn, low-fat chips, crackers, pretzels, graham crackers, animal crackers, and raisins. If you would like to contribute extra snacks for the students that forget to bring one, we have a snack drawer and would be grateful for any extras. Thanks!
ATTENDANCE Attendance is very important to your child's success. Please bring your child to school every day and on time. Excused absences are for illness, bereavement, and/or religious holidays. A note with the absence date and reason is required to turn in to the teacher/office within three days of the child returning to school. Please keep your child at home if he/she is sick. This is for the health and safety of the other children and staff.
TARDY If your child is not in class, ready to learn by 8:00 am each morning, and is late, he/she will need to go through the main entrance and stop in at the front office for a tardy pass before coming to the classroom. Students who are repeatedly absent or tardy may/can be retained.
PICK UP
School dismissal is at 2:11 pm Monday -Friday. Please be on time to pick up your child. Students who are going to Safekey will be dismissed together and walk to the Safekey area after dismissal. Students who ride their bikes will be dismissed together and walk to the bike rack area to get their bikes.
Please let me know about your child's after school pick up plans so I can make sure your child is safe at the end of the school day. If your pick up plans change on a particular day, please call the front office so we can be informed.
All students who are not picked up within 5 minutes of the dismissal time will be sent to the front office and/or Safekey.
HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION There are several ways we can communicate to ensure your child's success:
Home school RED folder--Check your child's backpack every day for important papers that stay at home and papers that need to be returned to school, including homework logs. You can also use the folder to send notes with your child as I may not always be available when you drop off your child to school.
Set up an appointment with me at (702) 799-5700. Please leave a voicemail if I am not available when you call. I will return your call as soon as I am able (usually after school or on prep in the morning around 9:00 am).
Sign up for REMIND-a text messaging system where I can text you important information daily and send last minute reminders. Please text me at 81010. In the message box put @286.bdf When it is time to enter your name, please write your child's name and your name so I know easily who is sending the message. Or enter rmd.at/286bdf into your web browser and follow the prompts. Thanks!
After school--For the safety of our children, if you would like to speak with me, please be patient and wait until I have dismissed all students. This way I can assure all students get home properly , and then I can give you my full attention.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Any supplies brought to school by your child, with the exception of his/her personal folders and notebooks, will be shared and used by all classmates. I encourage that special pencils and other special belongings be left at home. Please no markers, pens, pencil sharpeners, fidget toys, or pencil boxes/pouches. Due to the organization system I have set up in the classroom, pencil boxes and pouches are not needed.
We can always use more general supplies as well. We usually run out of glue sticks, facial tissue, handwipes, whiteboard markers, copy paper, and pencils throughout the year. Please feel free to donate more to our classroom if you can. You can view the supply list for 2nd grade at
Reading is required every day Monday-Thursday and is encouraged the other days of the week. Students are required to read a minimum of 30 minutes each day. Students are encouraged to complete the monthly reading log so I am aware of what each student is reading at home. Students are able to earn stickers on an incentive chart for completing the reading log each week.
Math Facts are required every day Monday-Thursday and is encouraged the other days of the week. Students need to practice their addition and subtraction facts at least 15 minutes per day. Please complete the weekly Math Homework Log so I am aware of what each student is doing to practice math facts at home. Some suggestions are Moby Math Fact Fluency, Xtramath.org, paper flashcards, and Reflex math.
PROGRESS REPORTS AND REPORT CARDS You will receive your child’s progress report once every three weeks and a final report card once each semester. These reports will include grades for class work, tests, and participation based on the following scale: Summative Assessments: 70% of grade Formative Assessments: 30% of grade 90-100%=A 80-89%=B 70-79%=C 60-69%=D 59% and below =F
PARENT VOLUNTEERS Parent Volunteers are welcome any time. I would like to get my routines and rules set up in August and September. I will open time slots for volunteers once these routines have been established. Your presence in the class is very important to support the learning environment and success of the children. Volunteers can help read with the students, practice math facts, and help prepare activities. If there is something special you would like to share, please let me know. Parents who would like to volunteer must attend a school volunteer training with administration before entering the classroom.
BIRTHDAYS Birthdays can be acknowledged in class if you would like. Please let me know a week before if you’d like to bring something to share with the class. Goodies other than food are preferred due to student allergies with the exception of popsicles. Children love items items like pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, yo-yo’s, bubbles, small bouncing balls, etc. If you do choose to send a special treat, it will be passed out at the end of the day from 2:05-2:11 pm.
HOLIDAYS Holidays such as Winter Holidays, Halloween, Valentine's Day and others are acknowledged. If, for religious reasons, you’d prefer not to have your child participate, please let me know.
BATHROOM We will take group bathroom breaks for the first month. Students may also go anytime they need without disrupting others, unless I’m teaching a lesson. Please dress them in comfortable and easy to fasten clothing.
BACKPACKS Please write your child’s name on their backpack and room number. If something is lost, there is a Lost and Found near the main entrance of the school. If possible write your child’s name on anything and everything they can put on and take off, like jackets, hats, etc.
CELL PHONES If your child has a cell phone and it is brought to school, it must turned off and remain in their backpack during school hours. Students who are using their cell phones during the school day will be sent to the office.
TOYS Toys from home should not be brought to school. Our room is filled with wonderful materials; I don’t want any of your special items to get broken or misplaced.
EMERGENCY For the safety of your child please keep information updated at all times, such as contact numbers, home address, and work information. You can update emergency contact information online through the Infinite Campus portal. Also, please make sure your child memorizes their phone numbers and address.
IMPORTANT SCHOOL PAPERS Please go through your child’s backpack and RED folder every day. Read and complete all school papers, then turn it in the next day or as soon as possible.
FIRST DAY The first day of school may be difficult for some of our children (and parents). Please know I will do everything I can to keep them happy and safe, but please try to prepare your child by talking to them about school and the routine you will have every day. Explain that you will bring them to school, leave them with their teacher and friends to listen and learn. Tell them they need to listen, respect and be kind to their teachers and friends. Then let them know you will be back to pick them up.
RECESS---every morning from 10:20 am-10:30 am We go outside every day. (weather permitting) Children are encouraged to wear…
Shirts that cover their shoulders (no spaghetti straps) and standard school attire-Please see school website for further information.
Sneakers/athletic shoes that are appropriate for your child. Velcro straps if they cannot tie their shoes (PLEASE work on this skill at home!) and tie up shoes if your child can tie their shoes unassisted. Double tying is a great idea if they seem to come untied all the time!
Sun block
Students may bring water bottles with their name on it.
